Electric ATV maintenance centres on the battery and charger, brakes, tires, steering, suspension, controls, drivetrain, electrical connections and seasonal storage. Electric models remove gasoline, engine-oil changes, spark plugs and carburetor service from routine ownership, but they still require regular inspection and correct battery care.

Venom Motorsports Canada currently offers electric ATV platforms including the E-Madix 1300W and E-Grizzly 1500W. Both use 48V electrical systems, but their battery systems are different, so charging and storage instructions should never be copied from one model to another.

Electric ATV maintenance: quick checklist

  • Inspect the battery, charger and charging port.
  • Test throttle, brakes, steering and shutoff controls before riding.
  • Check tire condition and pressure.
  • Inspect wheel hardware, suspension and accessible fasteners.
  • Look for loose, damaged or wet electrical connections.
  • Inspect chain or drivetrain components according to the exact model.
  • Clean and dry the ATV after mud or wet riding.
  • Follow the battery-specific winter storage procedure.

Do not interchange chargers simply because both systems are labelled 48V. Battery chemistry, connector, polarity and charging profile must match the exact ATV.

Pre-Ride Electric ATV Inspection

A short pre-ride inspection can catch problems before the ATV is put under load.

1. Battery and Electrical System

Check that the battery is secure and that visible connectors are fully seated. Do not operate or charge the ATV if the battery is swollen, cracked, leaking, unusually hot or producing a strong chemical or burning smell.

2. Throttle and Shutoff Controls

The throttle should move smoothly and return normally. Confirm the key, power switch and any speed-control or shutoff features work before relying on them.

3. Brakes

Test the front and rear braking system before every ride. The ATV should not be operated when the brakes feel weak, inconsistent or abnormal.

4. Tires and Wheels

Check tire pressure using the specifications for the exact ATV and tire. Inspect the tread and sidewalls for cuts, punctures or damage, and confirm wheel hardware is secure.

5. Steering and Suspension

Turn the handlebars through the normal steering range while the ATV is stationary. Look for unusual looseness, binding, damaged components or fluid leakage from suspension components where applicable.

How to Charge an Electric ATV Correctly

Always follow the charging sequence and charging-time instructions supplied for the exact model. The general principles are:

  1. Park the ATV on a stable surface and turn it off.
  2. Inspect the charger, cable, battery and charging port.
  3. Charge in a dry, ventilated area away from combustible materials.
  4. Use only the model-compatible charger.
  5. Keep the charger uncovered so heat can escape.
  6. Monitor the charge and stop if you notice smoke, swelling, leaking, unusual odour or excessive heat.
  7. Disconnect the charger according to the model instructions before riding.

Do not charge a wet battery or charging port. Do not continue using a damaged charger simply because it still appears to turn on.

Battery Care After Riding

Battery care depends on battery chemistry. A lithium pack and a lead-acid pack should not be managed using one universal charging routine.

After riding:

  • Turn the ATV off.
  • Inspect the battery and connectors.
  • Allow components to cool when required.
  • Recharge according to the model instructions.
  • Do not leave the ATV deeply discharged for an extended period.

Brake Maintenance

Electric power can feel simple to operate, but brake maintenance is the same kind of safety-critical work it is on any powersports vehicle.

Inspect:

  • Brake operation and lever travel.
  • Brake pads and rotors.
  • Hydraulic lines and fittings where equipped.
  • Any sign of fluid leakage.
  • Brake drag after adjustment or repair.

Mud, grit and water can contaminate braking components. Recheck the brakes after cleaning or demanding riding.

Tire Pressure and Condition

Tire pressure affects steering, traction, battery demand and ride quality. An underinflated tire creates extra rolling resistance, while a damaged tire can fail under load.

Use the pressure specified for the exact ATV and tire rather than applying a generic number found online. Check all four tires before a ride and after a long storage period.

Steering, Suspension and Fasteners

Vibration and rough terrain can loosen hardware over time. Inspect accessible steering and suspension hardware according to the service instructions, especially after assembly, the first riding sessions, hard impacts or transport.

Stop using the ATV if steering suddenly becomes loose, binds, pulls abnormally or develops significant play.

Drivetrain Maintenance

Electric ATVs still have mechanical components between the motor and wheels. Depending on the exact model, inspect the chain, sprockets, shafts, gears or other drivetrain parts listed in the service documentation.

Do not assume that an electric motor means the rest of the drivetrain requires no lubrication, adjustment or inspection.

Cleaning an Electric ATV

Cleaning should remove mud and debris without forcing water into the charging system, controller, battery, switches, motor connections or bearings.

  • Turn the ATV off before cleaning.
  • Follow the battery-removal procedure if the model calls for it.
  • Avoid high-pressure water on electrical components.
  • Dry the ATV after washing.
  • Inspect wiring and connectors after wet use.
  • Do not connect the charger until the ATV and charging port are dry.

Canadian Winter Storage

Canadian winters make battery storage particularly important. Cold temperatures can temporarily reduce battery performance, while long periods of neglect can permanently reduce capacity or damage a discharged battery.

Before Storage

  • Clean and dry the ATV.
  • Inspect the battery, charger and wiring.
  • Prepare the battery according to the model-specific storage instructions.
  • Store the ATV in a dry location.
  • Keep the charger clean, dry and protected.
  • Check the battery periodically during storage.

Returning to Service

Before the first spring ride, inspect the battery, charger, brakes, tires, steering, throttle, suspension, drivetrain and fasteners. Complete a low-speed operational test in a controlled area.

E-Madix Lithium Battery Storage

The current E-Madix uses a removable 48V lithium battery pack. Do not store it completely depleted. Follow the supplied instructions for storage charge, temperature and inspection intervals.

E-Grizzly Lead-Acid Battery Storage

The E-Grizzly uses a 48V lead-acid battery pack. Lead-acid batteries should not be left discharged for extended periods. The complete pack should be evaluated when one cell appears weak because one failing cell can affect the performance of the system.

Assembly and Pre Delivery Inspection

A freight-delivered electric ATV requires complete assembly, adjustment, inspection and testing before operation. Review the current Pre Delivery Inspection process before first use.

When Should You Stop Riding?

Stop and inspect the ATV if you notice:

  • Brake performance has changed.
  • The throttle does not return normally.
  • Steering develops looseness or binding.
  • The ATV repeatedly cuts power.
  • The battery or charger becomes unusually hot.
  • You smell burning or see a melted connector.
  • There is visible battery swelling, cracking or leaking.
  • A tire, wheel or suspension component is damaged.

Electric ATV Maintenance FAQs

Do electric ATVs need oil changes?

They do not require gasoline-engine oil changes. The drivetrain, suspension and other mechanical components may still have model-specific lubrication and service requirements.

Can I use the same charger for the E-Madix and E-Grizzly?

No. They use different battery systems. Use the charger approved for the exact ATV and battery.

Should I charge an electric ATV after every ride?

Follow the model-specific battery instructions. Do not leave the battery deeply discharged for a long period, but do not apply one universal charging routine to every battery chemistry.

Can I store an electric ATV in an unheated shed all winter?

Only if the temperature and storage conditions remain within the battery manufacturer’s limits. A dry, temperature-appropriate location and periodic battery checks are important.

Are electric ATVs maintenance free?

No. They remove several gasoline-engine service items but still require battery, brake, tire, steering, suspension, drivetrain and electrical maintenance.
